IN EUROPE, THEY’VE FIGURED OUT THE FORMULA FOR MODERNIZING HISTORIC HOMES WITHOUT ERASING HISTORY. WE WENT FOR A LONDON TOWNHOUSE AESTHETIC—COMFORTING, FAMILIAR BUT UPDATED. WE TOOK A BOLD CHANCE ON A POWDER BLUE KITCHEN AND IT PAID OFF. IT’S A SOFT BLUE THAT’S INTEGRATED INTO THE SPACE. THIS HOME COULD HAVE GONE TOO CLASSIC OR TOO MODERN—IT WAS IMPORTANT WE HIT THAT HAPPY MEDIUM.

		<description>DEL MARTHIS HOME IS ON THE BRINK OF BEIGE WITHOUT GOING THERE. IT IS SURROUNDED BY NATURE AND A FEW BLOCKS FROM THE BEACH SO IT FEELS CLOSE TO THE EARTH. THE CLIENT IS PASSIONATE ABOUT MODERN DESIGN AND WANTED TO PAY HOMAGE TO THAT ERA WITHOUT THE HOME FEELING LIKE A MAD MEN SET. CALIFORNIA IS A BIT SUN BEATEN, SO EVEN THE PERFECT IN THIS HOME FEELS A LITTLE IMPERFECT.

		<description>HILLSIDETHIS INTERIOR COULD HAVE GONE REALLY WRONG. SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE UPDATED THIS MID-CENTURY HOME BY REMOVING THE WOOD PANELING AND BUSTING OUT THE FIREPLACE. INSTEAD, WE LEANED INTO THESE FEATURES. THIS HOME HAS A CLEAN CALIFORNIA AESTHETIC BUT IT STILL FEELS WARM AND FAMILIAR. SURE, WE COULD HAVE DRY-WALLED EVERYTHING AND MADE THE FIREPLACE TRAVERTINE AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BEAUTIFUL, BUT IT WOULDN’T FEEL AS CHIC OR HAVE ANY CHARACTER.

		<description>ENCINITASTHIS HOUSE IS QUINTESSENTIAL CALIFORNIA. WE DIDN’T NEED TO BRING THE OUTSIDE IN BECAUSE WITH THE FLOOR-TO-CEILING WINDOWS, IT WAS ALREADY THERE. SINCE THE HOME IS DROWNING IN GREEN WE WERE ABLE TO INJECT RICH COLORS WITHOUT CLOSING OFF SPACES. WE WOVE EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITH NATURAL TEXTURES AND FINISHES. THE HOME FEELS ETHEREAL LIKE IT’S FLOATING IN THE TREETOPS.

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PROJECT - LIKE BRECCIA VIOLA MARBLE RECEPTION DESK, PLASTER WALLS AND SOFT CURVES - CREATES THE FEELING OF LUXURY, WARMTH AND EASE. IT’S BASICALLY THE SAME APPROACH WE TAKE IN OUR RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS.

IT’S DEFINITELY A GATHERING PLACE BUT ONE THAT’S CONDUCIVE TO LOUNGING. GIVEN THE FLOW BETWEEN THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES IT WAS IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE CONNECTED. THE OWNERS ARE CHIC AND HAVE A BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY SOUTH ASIAN ART. BUT THEY ALSO HAVE KIDS AND WANTED A TRUE FAMILY HOME.
